What you didn't know...

Sustainable Eucalyptus Farming

A lot of people have plenty of misconception about the production and process of harvesting eucalyptus trees. May it be contributing to deforestation to the claim of large amount of carbon emissions; of all which are wrong! The aim of Sustainable Forest Management and Eucalyptus is to inform society of the reality of a tree which is often criticized but about which little is actually known in terms of its extraordinary function and characteristics, aspects which make it a unique resource in terms of generating wealth and environmental benefits.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the product and billing.
Why did you choose Eucalyptus Tree?
Eucalyptus wood is sustainable thanks to the trees’ carbon sequestration. These species’ large size, fast growth, and coppice regeneration enable relatively short rotations of sustainable timber harvesting. Also, locally-grown eucalyptus has lower transporting carbon emissions than imported wood. Eucalyptus wood is a sustainable material because of the eucalyptus trees’ carbon sequestration potential and the carbon offset value at the end of any products made with eucalyptus wood.

Eucalyptus as a material is made from the pulp of eucalyptus trees. Meaning, the Organic Eucalyptus Fabric is Eco-friendly since products made from it can be recycled and biodegradable. The fiber will usually degrade completely in waste treatment plants. Producing this fabric involves less emissions, energy, and water usage than other more conventional fabrics. Its similar to rayon in feel. Soft, breathable, lightweight and comfortable.

Eucalyptus plantations produce the renewable raw material that is needed to produce oxygen and fix carbon in large quantities is used to create pulp and energy, including forests and domesticated wood residue, in addition to having several other commercial and consumer-related applications.

But above all, eucalyptus is a tree with enormous environmental benefits value: Its sustainable growth is favorable and its water usage efficiency minimizes the risk of forest fires, increases biodiversity, and gives new natural enhances the landscape, restores damaged or unsuitable soils, and creates new open areas. All of which are obviously extremely advantageous to the environment and in society.
What is Lyocell?
Lyocell is a flexible and versatile fiber made from eucalyptus and other wood – and it doesn’t take lots of energy or chemicals to produce. Lyocell is a cellulose-based fibre manufactured from specially-grown wood pulp. An unlike cotton, wool and silk it is very easy, cheap (and energy friendly) to process. The wood pulp – often from quick-growing and arid-zone friendly eucalyptus – is broken down by special amine solutions into semi-liquid paste. The paste is then ejected under pressure from a special spinneret nozzle to form threads; these are flexible and can be woven and manipulated just like natural fibers. Lyocell is the generic name, but you can find it labeled as Tencel on garments and other items such as bedding or curtains.
What is the Lyocell process?
The lyocell process was invented in the 1980s by researchers at textile company Courtalds, and uses a fairly simple process. The eucalyptus wood (extremely fast-growing with low water and minimal pesticide requirements) pulp is soaked in a non-toxic amine oxide solution to make the cellulose paste. Although amine oxide is sourced from hydrocarbon oil bases, it can be 95% purified and reused again and again in the lyocell process, so has a very low environmental footprint.

This process extracts raw cellulose from the wood pulp, which can then be pumped through the fine nozzle systems to produce the lyocell filaments. The biggest makers, Austrian company Lenzing Fibers, call it a "solvent spun fiber" process that closely mimics the cellulose structure found naturally in wood and twigs. The result is a “natural” fiber that is soft, smooth, breathable, naturally wrinkle-resistant, and relatively environmentally sustainable.

The companies producing it – currently only a few plants in the US, India and Europe produce it – claim lower atmospheric emissions from smokestacks and cleaner and less) wastewater too. The processes that normally accompany other “natural” fibers such as bleaching, washing and sterilizing are absent, making lyocell much more environmentally friendly overall.
How do you turn the Eucalyptus Tree into a fabric?
It is clear that a certain amount of energy and water need to be consumed in order to get the final product. Using the eucalyptus fiber we are allowed to use less. We decide to not dye the fabric after the manufacturing process, leaving the color that the process creates. At the moment we aren’t able to find completely natural dyes that are compatible with the environment and have sufficient grip on the fabric, so we chose to dye only pieces made in organic cotton and silk.

Working with eucalyptus fiber is expensive and requires longer times to be made into yarn. During the process, the fiber is spun in a light twist using a small spinning wheel that secrete a small amount of fiber at a time. It can also be pleated, but that would take even longer.
How does billing work?
The bill is computed from the amount of all your orders. Additional payment may occur due to the changes in shipment policy depending on the available shipping providers available in your country.
Is Eucalyptus Fabric safe to wash in a machine?
Lyocell is also strong and durable. It is the strongest cellulosic fiber when dry, even stronger than cotton or linen and is even stronger than cotton when wet. This means it can cope with many successful machine washes when woven into a fabric.
Is it vegan?
YES! Lyocell appears to be mostly harmless for both animals and people. For one thing, it’s a vegan fabric—as long as it’s not blended with wool, silk, or other animal-derived fibers, of course. And if it originates from sustainably-managed forests, where ecosystems are allowed to continue to flourish, then no obvious harms will have been caused to animals.

In terms of people, as the production process is non-toxic, communities are not affected by pollution. Equally, as the process relies on a series of lab-based manufacturing steps, it is not especially labor-intensive. Social concerns have been raised in the context of intensive eucalyptus monocultures, in terms of local communities not being consulted about a change of use of land, and losing out on a source of subsistence farming. This is another reason why sustainably-managed forests play an important role in the overall sustainability credentials of the eucalyptus fabric which is used to make our clothes.
How green is the production?
Eucalyptus trees are felled rather than uprooted, meaning that there is no need to continuously plant new trees. They also grow quickly, don’t need irrigation or pesticides, and can grow in relatively poor, dry, and rocky soil.

Through a closed-loop system in the manufacturing of lyocell: we manage to recover and reuse 99% of the solvent in new processing cycles. In addition, the solvent is considered non-toxic for air and water. This approach minimizes any environmental impacts. And, crucially, the wood used originates from sustainable forestry. When compared to conventional cotton, the lyocell production process used 50% lese.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that things change. You can cancel your orders at any time and we’ll refund you the difference already paid.
What is your return policy?
At the moment, the only way to return a product is to send it back by your local courier. We will only refund or exchange your order once we received the product. However, damages caused during the shipment or handling of the courier is not in our responsibility and shall not be liable for an exchange or refund.
